9 in 10 American adults own a cell phone as of May, and these adults are using their phones for a variety of activities other than voice calls, according to [pdf] new data from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. Sending and receiving text messages (81% of cell phone owners) continues to be the most common activity, but 60% are now accessing the internet from their phone (up from 29% in 2009) and 52% are sending and receiving emails (up from 27% in 2009).
